morning vinyl

Good morning.  Currently it is raining in Minneapolis, so our 2 1/2 feet of beautiful white snow is compacting to 1 1/2 feet of whitish black slush.  While it is great that it is raining, and getting rid of some of the snow, when the temps drop, we will have a city of ice to deal with.  which is no fun.

But that is not what I'm talking about here today.  Instead, let me switch gears to vinyl.  For Christmas, my Dad and step mom got me (and Amanda...) and new receiver.  Our old one was from my Grandpa's back room, and probably bought in the late 70's.  it was in rough shape.  So I asked for a new receiver for Christmas in the hope of listening to more vinyl.  And already, that has happened.  Ive been listening to any album that I haven't listened to in a while, or ever.  And Ive been going to the local shop near my house (Hymie's....more on that place on another day) to buy albums I enjoy, or are interested in.  This morning I rocked a little traffic (who doesn't love Steve Winwood...) And of course, ARETHA! (this is the album I bought A for Christmas and it is wonderful.)
Below are pictures from Hymie's.  They have a really great jazz, rock, classical, and even old school pop.
When I have a little more time, and a camera that isn't my cell phone, I will do a little review on Hymie's.

Happy Thursday, Y'all!

the gift of giving....trash bags

Happy Tuesday!  One more day closer to a LOOOONG weekend filled with family and friends and home cooked meals and drinking at Tosa bars.  Ahhhh. I love the Holidays.

Last weekend I had to finish up some holiday shopping for my brother (Corey) and his fiance (Jessica).  Shopping for my brother is kind of easy, because we have a lot of similar tastes, but kind of hard because he can be picky.

I had also heard that Andy from Trash Bags had a little pop up shop at Angry Catfish on Saturday.  I was out riding on Friday night and enjoyed the road conditions, so I geared up (after cleaning the hell out of the apartment....when your partner is gone for 4 days, you can really trash a place pretty easily without trying...)  and headed over.
There were a handful of people there when I got there, however a lot of what Andy brought to sell had already been sold.  BUT, I managed to find some goodies, and take a look at his new backpack design.
Below are the gifts I purchased for my Bro and his fiance.  The tool pouch is for Corey-as he is a bike mechanic and I dunno if he has one.  The wastebasket (hip pouch) is for Jess.  I have one and LOVE it.  So nice for rides in which you do not need to bring much.  or going to a chow and you don't want a big bag with you.  I also use mine for races a lot, however I dunno if my soon-to-be sister in law will do alley cats.
The things I like about Andy's bags are that the guy is just so nice and friendly.  A few summers ago, Amanda ordered a custom backpack with a bare/winter tree on it.  This was one of his first backpacks.  And shortly after making mine, he tried different styles, which he stuck with.  So basically, my pack is very one of a kind.  I have never seen one like it out there, but Andy says there are a few.  Anyhow, while Amanda ordered it for me, and was in quiet cahoots with Andy because it was a birthday gift.  I didn't really meet the guy until after it was made, however every time I see him, he is just so pleasant to talk with.  And this makes me love his product even more.  I have used my backpack all over the place and I love it. It is pretty big, but it is great for winter when I have a lot of gear.  I have also traveled with it and it really holds up well.  Anyways, check out his shop if your looking for a local Mpls made pack-again, made with craftsmanship, and *love*.
And just a little view of how Mpls snow is treating us.....
There is just so much right now, I'm not sure what they are going to do with it if we get more!
HAPPY TUESDAY!

poetry in motion

Hi Friends.  I'm alone this week, as A had to go back to MI to attend a funeral.  The passing of her friend was very unexpected, and really difficult for Amanda, as Nick was one of her dearest friends.  Little did I know it would affect me as well.

We get older and life starts to become a lot more real.  Not just because we start to decide what we want to do with ourselves for the next 30 years, but because everything starts to be put in perspective.  My Grandfather died 2 years ago.  It was really hard for me.  But we are taught at a young age that Grandparents will not be around forever.  Then I lost my step dad.  Again, a really hard time for my family.  But again, his health was failing, and it was his time to go.

But when a friend, or peer(assume I am talking about one of MY peers) or child dies, something else happens inside of you.

I lost a close friend, Mike, a few years back.   Originally, he went missing after a night of music, partying and most likely, a lot more.  After a few days, his body was found in a river in Portland, where he had been living.  Obviously it was a tragic ending and pretty hard to take.

We still miss the shit out of you, Buddy!
Mike was a really great guy, and thinking of his *GIANT* smile still makes me smile. It has been almost three years since we lost him and I still sometimes think that he is still around, but I just haven't seen him in a while.  To be completely honest, I still haven't deleted his number from my cell phone. I know that is crazy.  It is just my way to remember him whenever I get to the M's in my phonebook.

Why, might you ask, am I bringing up this pretty sad material on an otherwise happy blog?  Well, mainly because I often times forget that this-what I'm doing, this life of mine, well it is real.  And it is the only one I have. There is no "big event" to wait for, because it will never come.  The big event is waking up each day and being alive.

A lot of times I think of old friends I haven't talked to-you know, the ones that are on my "to call" list.  But days turn into weeks and months, and I don't end up calling them.  I say hello on FB, or ask so and so how so and so is doing.  But how am I to know what may happen to them while I'm *thinking* of calling.  Amanda was very lucky.  She had an urge to call her friend, about a month ago. And she went with that urge, called him and caught up.  Little did she know it would be the last time they'd talk.  Thinking more about this, I want to change the way I do it.  Even my best best best friends I put off calling.  I tell myself that I don't have the energy, or lengthy period of time to invest.  But really, that's bullshit for me being lazy.

Every so often this happens.  I have a desire to make a serous change in my life.  I would say that change sticks about 50% of the time.  For example, I haven't had a cigarette in 2 months.  I've been riding my bike to work almost every morning.  I make sure to eat salad at least 3 times a week.  But am I writing in a journal?  Am I trying new recipes once a week?  Do I leave the house past 9:30 to see shows on the weekdays?  the answer to all of those is a big fat NO.

With 2010 coming to a close (thank CHRIST!  what an emotional and intense year...)  I've been thinking about what I want 2011 to be like.  Not that I plan on sharing with you all the things I want to change about myself, or the things I want to add/subtract from my life, but I don't think it is a terrible idea to have goals like this.  So, while I'm alone tonight (perhaps Ill venture out to Grease Rag....it has been too long)  I'm going to start making notes on the things I want to improve in the next year.  I don't always like the idea of quitting something for new years.  Sometimes adding things can be just as useful.  and you should do the same.

And for no other reason than I enjoy this poem, and Billy Collins knows how to make you feel swell, here is a little something for you all.

The Chairs That No One Sits In

You see them on porches and on lawns
down by the lakeside,
usually arranged in pairs implying a couple

who might sit there and look out
at the water or the big shade trees.
The trouble is you never see anyone

sitting in these forlorn chairs
though at one time it must have seemed
a good place to stop and do nothing for a while.

Sometimes there is a little table
between the chairs where no one
is resting a glass or placing a book facedown.

It might be none of my business,
but it might be a good idea one day
for everyone who placed those vacant chairs

on a veranda or a dock to sit down in them
for the sake of remembering
whatever it was they thought deserved

to be viewed from two chairs
side by side with a table in between.
The clouds are high and massive that day.

The woman looks up from her book.
The man takes a sip of his drink.
Then there is nothing but the sound of their looking,

the lapping of lake water, and a call of one bird
then another, cries of joy or warning—
it passes the time to wonder which.

Happy Friday Jr.

BRUNCH!!!

I love a good brunch. One where different friends cook different things, and you take your time cooking and just chit chat in the kitchen and catch up on the happenings of your life. Something about the kitchen brings me a very safe feeling. A "I'm warm in my house and it is cold outside" sort of feel (especially in this cazse...it was a WINTER brunch!)

I typically order a savory breakfast item when it comes to breakfast. However when you have a brunch going down, there are usually more than one item, and you can have both sweet and savory.

Why am I talking about this?  Well because I had an AWESOME bruch this past weekend.  Kat, Laura and I planned to get together, make some brunch and then hit the snow covered roads for a little ride.  Well....on my way to their place (near Powderhorn Park) from my house in Longfellow, I got a flat.  Like East of Hwy 55.  I assumed that I was about halfway to their place (not even close to halfway.) I took a look at the tire, and fixing a flat in the cold and snow is just not something I wanted to do.   So I decided to just hoof it.  And it took maybe 30 minutes or so, but it was a pretty nice walk.  And I knew i had a BRUNCH to look forward to.
When I arrived, I could smell the chai and egg bake as I walked in the front door to their place. And away we went!

Laura made chai, and both cranberry and regular pancakes, along with homemade pastries (flakey poptart-like happiness). Kat made a killer veggie egg bake with spinach and mushrooms and tomatoes and herbs and some cheese. She also made some basic hashbrowns. I was incharge of veggie hash, which consisted of red potatoes, carrots, onion, zucchini, yellow squash and I think that was it. All of the food turned out amazing, and really made me want to do brunch with friends more often!

 And mimosas, of course :)
So Mighty Swell is this weekend....maybe someone needs to do brunch with me before we head over?  think about it :)

Winter Bike Check

Hello Friends.  Happy SUNNY Thursday! It feels good that (while I am in door while the sun is up) the sun is out today!

I know I promised a good recipe today, however there really was no recipe involved with our stir fry last night.  Yes, it was lovely-sugar snap peas, zucchini, carrots, chicken, ginger, garlic, salt and pepper over some rice.  But nothing fancy.  My bad.  Next time I cook something good, I promise to share.

Moving on....now that Winter is officially here and I have put away my other bikes for the next few months, lets take a minute to scoop what I am riding now, shall we? (this is inspired by my friends at Grease Rag-a RAD community of WTF's that like to bike and like to learn how to take care of and fix their own bikes)
As I mentioned the other day, I got a few new parts for my Winter wip that I recently put on my bike.  With these parts added, I feel my winter bicycle is almost as good as it will get for the season.  I say almost because I am still *hoping* for a few things....but you can read about that below.

You can see that I have flat bars on this bike.  My first year winter riding I had flipped and chopped bullhorns.  They were alright, but I felt I wasn't upright enough to be in control when on ice/snow.  So I switched to risers, however they were from a polo bike, so they were too short.  This year I went to the Hub (Minnehaha) and bought a 5 dollar flat bar from their used parts section.  5 bucks, and I feel WAY more in control than I ever have on a winter bike.

Also, note that I have a knobby tire on my front wheel.  This is because I have a 27 1 1/4" rim.  These are and OLD size.  This means that they do NOT make studded tires for this size wheel.  Now you may be asking, "Cayla. why don't you just buy a new front wheel?"  That is a fair question.  My answer is: Because this one still works!  This is the original wheel that came on the first fixed gear bicycle I ever bought 4 years ago.  It came in a pair, but the back one got taco-ed 2 summer ago at polo.  I am sure that one of these days the wheel will die, but for now, it is still working and I have no need for it on any other bike.   I will also say that this is one of the things I'd like to adjust. I'd like to buy a 700c front wheel to throw a studded tire on it and then I can switch on days that are crazy icy/snowy.  But I need something on the cheap, so holler if you hear anything.
new clips.  These guys are similar to the Hold Fast straps, but made by local polo cat, James.  I had been using power grips, which worked well for the last 3 season, but I was looking for something that held my feet in a little better and were more comfortable.  I saw that James had his own company going, so I thought I'd support a local guy.  I love them.
that top tube pad is mainly because there is a piece that holds the cable housing to the top tube, but it sticks out a lot and last year it caught a pair of my pants and ripped it from crotch to calf.  YIKES!  so I threw that on there for safety.
I like the idea of fenders.  And I like cheap things that work well.  I have plastic planet bike fenders that came with my first fixed gear.  They are cheap, and plastic, but they keep me dry.  Having fenders in winter is crucial.  Being in the cold is not too hard, but being in the cold when you are WET?  well that is just a dangerous mess.
While you can't actually tell from the photo, I ride fixed in the winter.  For me, I feel like I have much more control.  I think it is easier to stop, and feel the road/ice/snow under me when I'm riding fixed.  Right now I have a good ratio 43:17.  I can still get going (mini) fast, but it is easy enough to ride in the brutal wind, or over huge snow banks.  However, just because I ride fixed and rarely use my brake, I still have a front brake installed.  In "oh shit" situations, it is smart to do.  Also, last winter my back wheel (fixed side of the hub) stripped out on me and out of nowhere, I started coasting (on my fixed gear) which was a bit of a shocker and an ALERT SIREN went off in my head.  I used my brake at that point.  then I locked up my bike and had a sad walk home.
Most of the other stuff on this bike are just parts I had around(old/off my old builds).  Because Winter bikes often get the salt beat into them, I tend to go for things on the cheap, because they will have to be replaced in a few seasons (more often than not.)  Even if I clean my chain every day and take great care of it, in time Ill need a new one. That is just sort of how I look at all things winter bike related.

So there you have it-My winter ride.  Now you go out and make one for yourself. need help?  let me know.

10 Degrees

It is getting a little colder outside. This is the time when it starts to get easier to say something like "screw it, I'm driving today."  But I'm very much trying not to do that.  My commute is roughly 20 minutes, which is beyond doable.  But some mornings are harder than others.  The main issue is just getting all bundled up.  Once I have my gear on, it isn't too hard to get out the door, but that initial decision to put on long underwear or puss out. Today, I did the sensible thing and rode my bike.  But as you can see from the bike rack at work, the numbers are dwindling.

So here we go....wardrobe check at 10 degrees (although according to Patrick Hammer, it was 16, but the TCF bank temp said 10 and that does not include the windchill, which pushed us to the negative side of things).

First layer-long underwear (cuddle duds on the bottom-silk and awesome, REI sweat wicking 94% polyester/6% spandex top) and (very) thin pair of wool socks (should have gone with a slightly thicker pair...10 degrees is cooler than you think)
Next layer-Jeans (could have gone with lined pants, or my carhardts for extra warmth, but I was ok) And an REI (part acrylic, part polyester) riding top, thicker wool socks and bandanna.
Next a fleece neck warmer, leg warmers(I got a pair from Target, which were cheap, but you can also just cut the sleeves off of an old sweater) wool/flannel cycling cap, helmet, goggles, and my jacket/shell (old columbia ski coat.  works wonders)
These goggles are AWESOME! this is my first stab at a good pair and they made my face SO happy this morning.  They were 16 bucks at REI (on sale, and worth every penny) but I would have paid more.  They really made the wind much less of an issue than it usually is.
And this is my new winter/polo helmet.  I have been thinking about one of these guys for the last year or so.  On black Friday I finally broke down and bought myself one.  Yes, a little pricey, but again, worth it.  It is way comfy, and I feel extra safe when riding on snow and ice.
And lastly, these awesome Lowa boots. These babies are great.  The first 2 winters I rode I wore old water proofed Skate shoes.  While they were pretty durable, my toesies always got a bit cold.  So last fall I picked these up on the WAAAAY cheap (thanks A!) and haven't turned back.
And that is that.  I hope I'm not boring any of you too much.  I am dorky and find things like this interesting.  Up next: I'm making stir fry tonight and it WILL be good and I WILL report back with a recipe.
Happy Wednesday!
