SCARY MOVIES!!!!

I love scary movies.  a lot.  But A isn't as into them as I am.  And that is fine.  I can still convince her to see one or two a year, usually around Halloween.  I'm a junky for getting scared.  I watch something, and without a doubt, get all freaked out.  My heart starts to race and I start thinking about "what if" situations.  I think of myself in the position of whoever is getting stalked, killed, haunted, etc....and then I try to think about what would I do if I were in their shoes.  This ends in me waking in the middle of the night and thinking "is that a person standing in the corner, or just my bathrobe draped over the door...."

The reason I bring this up is because Amanda is still out of town (in Savannah)  and I have had to sleep alone a lot this week.  And because I'm alone, when I wake in the night, it is harder to fall back asleep.  Especially if I wake because the dogs start barking, because this makes me think they are barking because someone is breaking in.

I have also been on a big "Criminal Minds" kick.  I can't stop watching the show.  I find myself thinking about where the unsub may be hiding, or being more aware of my surroundings, having my keys ready at all times, and in general being alert.  I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing.  Why does TV make me get a little nutsy?

Are there certain shows or movies that get you scared?  Like I said, I love scary movies and have seen a lot of classics, but still need to see more.  Here are some of the scariest and Ill explain why.
1. IT I saw this movie as a kid (you will notice a theme with this) and it scared the shit out of me.  I was afraid of rainy days, because I thought a clown from the sewer was going to kill me.  That movie is epic.  I remember watching it one of the last nights of my Sophomore year at the U.  My friend was one of the last people staying in the dorms.  Her room was empty except a tv/vcr, mattress and a suitcase.  Kelly, Jamie and I watched that movie in the empty dorms and when it came to going to the bathroom, we were all totally freaked out.  I just kept imagining the showers turning on and hearing the voice of Pennywise calling my name.  YIKES!
2. Pet Sematary Another movie I saw when I was probably too young to be watching things like that.  I mean the whole movie it totally creepy.  Yes, it is scary that things are coming back from the dead, but man, the character "Zelda"  the sister that had some sort of disease.  That was some scary stuff.  And the woman who hangs herself?  I was young, and didn't get it, and that scared me too.  I just remember thinking that I better not ever come across a pet sematary....
3.  Candyman  Again, I saw this at a young age and it terrified me.  I had to ask my mom to sit in the bathroom with me every time I showered for like a month.  I was so scared that I would look in my mirror and looking back at me would be Candyman.  All of my friends knew that it scared me.  Anytime we got into a sitaution where we were in the dark, and near a mirror, someone would slowly say "Cannnndy mannnn."  Then I would punch them in the arm and tell them I didn't want to hang out if they were going to scare me.  I watched it again a few years ago and it is still pretty creepy, but nothing like when I was 9.
4.  The Shining.  a classic.  I think everyone has seen this movie, as you should.  I mean, come on!  having your dad go totally nuts in a giant empty hotel and come after you?  creepy.  Ghosts of slaughtered twins, creepy.  a rotting old corspe-ish woman cackling in a bathtub, CREEPY!
5. The Ring/Ringu  I thought this movie was pretty great.  The Japanese version is creepier than the American version, but that is common in Japanese horror films.  visually, they terrify me.  But I think all the creepy images from the video tape within the movie added to the discomfort (in a good way) of watching this film.
6. Texas Chainsaw Massacre.  Again, classic gorefest.  This is a bloody, pretty gross movie.  See, I typically like ghost/haunting movies better.  The ones where someone is slaughtering humans like animals usually just grosses me out.  This is no different, but it is so short and intense the whole time, it makes it worth the watch.
7. Scream  I love Scream.  It came out when I was a teen, and for the first time in a while, we had a good horror trilogy going on.  I like that it has humor, but is still pretty insane.  The opening of that movie is great, and puts you in the place where you need to be in order to appreciate the rest of the movie.

8.  Re-Animator.  I saw this movie at when I was in High School.  It was a midnight movie and my brother's punk band(at the time) opened for the show.  This is a ridiculous movie from the 70's, a cult classic even.  it is outrageous.  I mean, so goofy that you need to see it.
9.  Alien  I have this quadrilogy.  In college, my roommate was really into great scifi.  Kelly got me to watch the original Alien, and I was hooked.  so creepy.  you never know exactly what is going on, or who is infected.  And the Alien is the first of its kind.

10.  Last House on the Left (original).  This movie is fucked up.  like really really fucked up.  I remember as a kid my mom telling me it was the scariest movie she had ever seen.  And I didn't know what that meant.  I had no idea what it was about, and my parents never told me.  Around Halloween during my senior year of college, I decided to watch it.  fucked up.  and scary.
11.  El Orfanato.  Amazing.  this film is beyond creepy.  And it really is a great story.  But it is pretty creepy.  I saw it in the theater a few years back, and I was mini afraid to be alone for a good few days. This is an incredible ghost story. This is the one you all should see.  I don't think enough people have seen it/recognized it.  But it is amazing.

And that my friends, is a run down on *some* of my favorite horror flicks.  I hope you get a chance to watch one of these in the next few days.

looking back...

Happy 13 days of Halloween!  I love this time of year.  I love the fall air starting to get a little cooler.  I love that all TV turns towards the creepy and strange (including all new episodes of Celebrity Ghost Stories, which happens to be one of my favorite shows...it's on Biography-check it out)  And I especially love coming up with a Halloween costume.

In the past I have thought of ideas for costumes in advance.  Like way advance.  This year, however A and I struggled to come up with something.  We thought about Sonny and Cher, JFK and Jackie O, but neither of those seemed to fit.  Then I came up with a killer idea (that you all will just have to wait for.)  We watched the movie that these characters come from over the weekend and now I am way stoked!  I just need to find fake glasses.

When I was a kid, my favorite costumes that I did were a pirate and Punky Brewster.  I loved both of those costumes a lot. When I got older, I continued the great costume theme.  I wish I have pictures of all of these, but I was blue man group with a few buddies, I was a live strong band, Beetle Juice (best costume I have ever had!) Burt the chimney sweep (from Mary Poppins) a civil war zombie, Pauly Bleaker (Juno) and last year I was Max (from where the wild things are.)  There are a few pictures below.  I'm hoping to find more....

Also, I love carving pumpkins.  My dad always carved a kick ass pumpkin and it inspired me to try to do cool ones myself.  I never mastered the art of it, however, so my work was never that amazing.  But I still love seeing pumpkins that are just super creepy, or well done in general!
see below!

And as I promised, my "Max" costume, and A and I as Juno and Pauly Bleaker. and the ultimate, Beetlejuice! Enjoy Friends.

Also, what are you all doing for Halloween? How about seeing your favorite mpls rock band (SOUTHSIDE HUSTLE) at a Halloween house party?  if you are interested, let me know.  It will be a fun time for everyone, including music and dance party.

cheers!

Ticking away the Moments....

Here's to another Tuesday, friends.  I like my Tuesdays.  I go to work and then to the High School, which I am really enjoying.  Then I head home, do homework and either head to Zach's, or have a free night (which is uncommon.)

Yes, you read correctly, I am currently taking classes and have had a lot of homework.  What I mean by homework is a lot of reading assignments.  See, during my undergrad, I didn't always do the reading.  of course I had the books, and would use them as references if I did need them.  But I mainly went to class, listened to lectures and took notes.

Now that I am doing this online classes thing, it is pretty different for me.  There are no lectures, just discussions via the Internet and a whole shit ton of readings.  I have my first quiz this week, which I hope will help me figure out if I need to pay more attention to details while reading, or if I can skim while reading a bit more.  we will see....

Anyhow, what I am trying to get at, is that with this new addition to my life (yes, classes....not a baby)  I am having a hard time prioritizing my time.  What I want to be doing.....
What I am actually doing....
To be honest, I am enjoying the school thing, and if you know me at all, you know that I tend to enjoy being overly busy....but I haven't really gotten into the full routine yet.  I was stressing out all day at work yesterday that I was behind in my readings for my Psychology 1001.  And now I'm starting to realize a few things; first off, dumb boys who drink keg beer every night and skip class all the time pass classes like Psych 1001.  Secondly, who am I kidding....I have a BA, I have worked with kids with ASD for 5 1/2 years.  I think I have a basic understanding of psych, and really there is no way I won't do reasonably well in this class.  I just need to stop stressing out.  You know what stressing out does?  It stresses out the people around you.  And you know what those people around you do?  They get annoyed.frustrated/short tempered with you.  And you know what that leads to?  sleeping on the couch (this is just a hypothetical, guys.  I did not sleep on the couch last night....)
Sometimes I forget to slow down my mind and relax.  I'm real good at telling others to look at the big picture, and just remain calm.  But I don't always take my advice.  So that is my goal for the week/month/time being.  I need to start applying the really good advice I have for others to my own life.
I think it is a really good idea to sometimes stop and recognize that people are always evolving (hopefully improving) and with that comes self reflection and change.  But you have to want to change, because or else you arent really going to get anywhere.
ok, those are my words of wisdom for the day.

Hope you all are having a nice week.

Minneapolis treasures?

Happy hump day, amigos.  It is a mighty fine Wednesday, isn't it?  As I sit in my very small office and listen to the current play the same songs they played yesterday, I gaze out the window (which is a treasure in my place of work.  very few desks have windows directly above them!) at the cloudless blue sky and think, "Hot damn, I love Fall!"

Now I know I have said that before.  actually Ive probably mentioned that in every post I have made since August.  And it is still true.

Today, my fall love comes from a  different place.  It comes from the host in me.  See this weekend my bestie from MKE (MANDA!) is coming to town.  Manda has been to the cities tons of times, and we have done many of the fun, touristy type Minnesota things.  We have done the Mall, the MIA, the Weisman, the Sculpture Garden, Como Zoo and Conservatory, and gone to a dozen restaurants that I love (mainly the Late Great Dinkytowner.)

This weekend, I am on the hunt to try some different things. Restaurants we haven't visited, Museums even I haven't been to, and so on.  Manda will be getting here on Thursday evening, and we will probably keep it low key.

Friday, we have plans to hit up Cause (http://www.spiritsandsound.com/) to see the Naj's band (New Century Masters: (http://www.facebook.com/newcenturymasters)  Manda has not seen Tony's band so it should be fun.

On Saturday, we hope to go to the Museum of Russian Art (http://www.tmora.org/)  I have never been to this museum but it from the looks of it, I think we will enjoy it.
I can't believe I have never even seen this place...
Perhaps after the museum we could check out the fall colors at Minnehaha Falls.  That place is lovely.  plus, it has Sea Salt, which is one of my favorite little places.

I think Saturday we will be heading to Nye's (http://www.nyespolonaise.com/), which (being honest here...even though it is a sad thing) Ive only been to once or twice.  I don't think I haven't ever even eaten there and I date a straight up polish girl....

But when it comes to Sunday, I'm not sure what to do.  I want to take Amanda to a great breakfast joint.  I was thinking Victor's, because I like that place.  But I'm just not sure.  I need suggestions on good breakfast places.  So please.  holler back.

Also, what makes Minneapolis amazing to you?  I have a handful of things that I love about this city.  and of course restaurants and museums and that sort of thing come into play.  But so do things like bike trails along the river, and secret beaches, and hidden roads that have great views of downtown at dusk.
So tell me what you all think.  What makes Minneapolis a gem to you?

Wear Your Helmet!

Hello. Today I'm going to tell a little story about why you should ALWAYS wear a helmet. It is a true story and it is about a good friend of mine, Alex.

Alex and I like to ride bikes together. He was part of the crew that road up to Duluth a few summers ago. All in all, he is a pretty safe and cautious cyclist.

This day, however, was different.

A week or so ago, Al was in Northeast hanging with our other buddy, Huss. The two had a few beers, and were hanging (I can't recall what they were actually up to, besides riding and hanging.) Al was heading back to his place, which is right by the U of M ST Paul Campus, on Larpenteur. He was within a few blocks from his house.

That morning, he noticed a kink in his neck, but didn't think anything of it. Well on this ride, that kink made it hard to raise his head and fully look up from a riding downward position. SO, Al was riding hard down a hill, and looking up every so often from his cruising position.
(Frame broke in 2 spots. it's a goner)

Well, at one point, he looked up too late, and hit a parked car. He must have been going pretty fast (20+mph) when he hit the car, because his frame snapped, and he went thru the back windshield of the parked car.

When he opened his eyes, he was in the back(ish) of the car. he got himself out, and didn't realize his injuries. He saw his broken bike (which he somehow was able to unclip from...he has no idea how) and felt blood gushing from his chin. And then he tried to walk home.

(Giant dent in the middle of the helmet from where he hit the windshield)

Luckily, there was a dude there that saw the whole thing, called an ambulance, told Al to hold up, and waited while the ambulance came. Alex ended up getting stitches. His bike is totaled (back wheel should be okay) and his helmet is toast. But his head is okay, and that is all that matters.

(yes, those are blood covered glasses that probably saved his eyes)
So, the lesson here? Pay attention when riding, even of parked cars, and also WEAR A HELMET!

Riding the Grand Rounds

Happy Wednesday Guys!!! I have been sick all week, but now I'm BACK! This past weekend myself, Jon Z, Sanj, Jac, Kat, Laura and Jaimie took a nice Saturday afternoon ride around the grand rounds. The entire Grand Rounds (well, Jac, Jon, Sanj and I did the whole thing...)

We had a blast. the weather was great-a nice cool nip when you stopped, but perfect while riding.

We started on the Greenway, and headed to the river. West River Road to Stone Arch, through Dinkytown to Diagonal trail, then up Stinson to St Anthony Parkway through Columbia Heights golf course and to the river.

At the river we stopped for a snack and such. Laura made homemade bread and the ladies brought PB and J for sammies. It was an awesome pit stop.

Then we crossed over the river to Camden and headed through North Mpls to Victory Memorial parkway, which connects with Theo Wirth, which connects to the lakes, and then over to Minnehaha trail all the way over to Minnehaha Falls. There we stopped at Sea Salt, had a few pitchers and po boys/fish tacos. It was a great way to end the ride. And then when we were all stuffed, we headed back to W. river road and I cut off on 38th and went back home.
Overall it was about 31 miles or so. Like I said, the weather was great, the company was great (I haven't seen Jaimie in months and was WAY excited to see her!)

I love Minneapolis!
